What you need to run Case File

A laptop, a current browser, and a headset. Nothing is installed and no admin rights are needed.

Browser

Chrome or Edge on Windows, Mac or ChromeOS, kept up to date. Safari on a Mac works. Firefox does not support the speech recognition Case File uses, so it is not supported. Phones and tablets can run a conversation, but the laptop is the training tool.

Headset

A headset or earbuds with a microphone. Laptop speakers with the built-in mic let the person on screen hear herself, and she answers twice. A quiet room helps for the same reason.

Microphone permission

The browser asks once, the first time you knock. Allow it. If it was denied, click the lock icon in the address bar and turn the microphone back on.

Connection

A normal office or home connection. The faces stream video and need about 2 Mbps; voice-only runs need far less. A department guest network usually works; a filtered network may need the addresses below allowed.

Nothing installed

Case File is a web page. There is no software to install, no plug-in, and nothing that needs an administrator.

Sign-in

By email: a code is sent to the officer's address each time. Seats are named by the department's coordinator; how that works.

Addresses to allow

  • app.investigativelogic.com (the application; HTTPS and secure WebSockets)
  • api.anam.ai and its media servers (the faces; HTTPS, WebSockets and WebRTC media on UDP)
  • investigativelogic.com (this site)

If WebRTC is blocked, the faces will not connect; voice-only runs still work.

What we keep

  • Each run's transcript, audio and debrief, stored in the United States, belonging to the department.
  • Officer name and email for sign-in. No other personal data is collected.
  • Every person, voice and face in Case File is synthetic; no real person's data is involved.
